What Is Copper Storage Disease?
Copper is an essential mineral for dogs, needed in small amounts for enzyme function, iron metabolism and connective tissue synthesis. The problem arises when copper accumulates in the liver over time β either because a genetic defect impairs the liver's ability to export copper normally, or because dietary copper intake chronically exceeds what the liver can process and excrete.
The result is hepatic copper toxicosis: progressive liver cell death as copper concentrations build up to toxic levels. In Bedlington Terriers, the condition is caused by a specific inherited mutation in copper transport. In Labrador Retrievers and some other breeds, the genetics are more complex and less fully characterised, but the end result is the same. The liver struggles to clear copper, and the accumulated burden slowly damages it.
What makes this disease particularly insidious is the timeline. A dog can accumulate liver damage across years without showing obvious clinical signs. By the time lethargy, vomiting, jaundice or weight loss become apparent, liver fibrosis or cirrhosis may already be present.
Which Breeds Are at Highest Risk?
Bedlington Terriers have the longest-established genetic copper storage problem β an autosomal recessive mutation affecting the COMMD1 gene (previously MURR1) that impairs copper excretion into bile. Genetic testing is available and strongly recommended for all Bedlington breeding dogs.
Labrador Retrievers are increasingly recognised as highly susceptible. Studies from the Netherlands found that a large proportion of Labradors over middle age have elevated hepatic copper concentrations, and that many otherwise healthy-seeming Labradors have copper levels at which other breeds would show liver disease. Why Labradors seem to tolerate higher levels before showing clinical signs is not fully understood.
Other affected breeds include Dalmatians, West Highland White Terriers, Skye Terriers, Doberman Pinschers, and some German Shepherd lines. In many of these, the precise genetic mechanism remains under investigation.
How Diet Influences Copper Accumulation
Diet alone does not cause copper storage disease in genetically normal dogs β the liver has efficient mechanisms for managing moderate copper intake. But in dogs with impaired copper metabolism, dietary copper is an important modifiable variable. Less copper coming in means less copper to accumulate, which can meaningfully slow the progression of hepatic damage.
The most important dietary source of copper for most dogs is beef liver, which contains exceptionally high copper concentrations. This creates a direct conflict for homemade feeders, because liver is also a valuable source of vitamin A, B12 and other micronutrients. For Bedlington Terriers and high-risk Labradors, beef liver must be strictly limited or avoided. Chicken liver has lower copper content and may be used in small amounts. Other organ meats β heart and kidney β are more variable but generally lower in copper than liver.
Shellfish, particularly oysters and mussels, are extremely high in copper and should be excluded from the diets of any copper-sensitive breed.

What to Feed a Copper-Sensitive Dog
For a confirmed copper storage diagnosis, dietary management is done under veterinary supervision β your vet or a veterinary nutritionist will guide copper targets specifically. But for owners of predisposed breeds looking to reduce dietary copper load as a preventive measure, the practical steps are reasonably clear.
Build the diet around chicken, turkey or white fish as the primary protein. These are meaningfully lower in copper than red meats. If you use organ meats, choose heart over liver β it is a valid nutritional contribution without the same copper burden. Avoid beef liver and shellfish entirely. Minimise legumes, which have moderate copper content and appear in many grain-free commercial diets in high amounts (another reason grain-free kibble may have contributed to elevated liver copper in susceptible Labradors).
Zinc is worth understanding here. Zinc and copper compete for the same absorption pathway in the intestine. A diet adequate in zinc helps reduce copper absorption β this is why zinc supplementation (under veterinary guidance) is sometimes used therapeutically in copper storage disease. Foods naturally high in zinc include pumpkin seeds, beef, and certain fish. This is not a reason to self-medicate with zinc supplements, but it does reinforce the value of a nutritionally varied diet.
π¬ The Bedlington Terrier Exception
For Bedlington Terriers with confirmed copper storage disease, dietary restriction alone is not sufficient. These dogs require medical management β typically with D-penicillamine or trientine (copper chelation agents) and sometimes zinc supplementation. The genetic defect is complete enough that dietary copper reduction is supportive, not curative. If you have a Bedlington Terrier, copper status genetic testing should be done before breeding, and all dogs should have baseline liver copper assessment.
Progressive lethargy, reduced appetite, weight loss, vomiting, increased thirst and urination, jaundice (yellowing of skin and whites of eyes) and abdominal fluid accumulation. Acute hemolytic crisis (sudden, severe anaemia from copper dumping into the blood) can also occur. Any of these in a predisposed breed warrants urgent veterinary assessment and liver function testing.
Homemade Feeding Advantages for Copper-Sensitive Breeds
One of the significant advantages of homemade feeding for copper-sensitive breeds is control. Commercial dog food β particularly kibble β may contain mineral premixes that add copper at levels calibrated for average dogs, which can be far too high for a predisposed Labrador or Bedlington Terrier consuming that kibble year after year. With a homemade diet, every ingredient is known, and liver, shellfish and high-copper legumes can be kept out entirely.
This is not an argument to avoid all veterinary monitoring β annual liver enzyme checks are important for predisposed breeds regardless of diet. But it is a legitimate nutritional advantage that homemade feeders can use thoughtfully.
