What Zinc Does in a Dog's Body
Zinc is involved in over 300 enzymatic reactions in the body, making it one of the most functionally significant micronutrients in canine nutrition. It is particularly critical for skin barrier function and coat quality โ the rapidly dividing cells of the skin and hair follicles have some of the highest zinc requirements in the body. Without adequate zinc, the skin's ability to maintain its barrier function breaks down: moisture is lost, pathogen defence weakens, and the characteristic dry, flaky, crusting lesions of deficiency develop.
Beyond the skin, zinc plays roles in wound healing, immune function, protein synthesis, taste and smell, thyroid hormone metabolism and reproductive health. A dog with borderline zinc status will often be unthrifty and poorly resistant to infection before obvious skin signs appear.
Zinc-Responsive Dermatosis: The Genetic Form
The most dramatic presentations of zinc deficiency occur in Siberian Huskies and Alaskan Malamutes, where a genetic condition called zinc-responsive dermatosis exists. These dogs have impaired intestinal zinc absorption โ they may eat a diet perfectly adequate for other breeds but still become zinc-deficient because their gut cannot extract sufficient zinc from the food.
The condition manifests as thick, crusty, scaly lesions particularly around the eyes, muzzle, chin and ears. The skin at pressure points โ paws, elbows, hocks โ may also become thickened and cracked. In severe cases, systemic signs including lymph node enlargement occur. The condition responds dramatically to zinc supplementation under veterinary guidance, often improving within weeks.
For Husky and Malamute owners feeding homemade diets, this is not a reason to avoid home cooking โ it is a reason to be specifically aware of phytate content in the diet and to choose zinc sources carefully.
The Phytate Problem: Why Raw Grains Block Zinc
Phytic acid โ present in raw grains, legumes, nuts and seeds โ binds zinc (and other minerals) in the gut and renders them largely unavailable for absorption. This is why dogs eating high-legume or high-grain diets may technically receive adequate zinc on paper while actually absorbing far less than they need.
The critical point for home cookers is this: thorough cooking destroys phytates. Soaking grains overnight and then cooking them fully โ until completely soft โ dramatically reduces phytate levels. Brown rice cooked to tenderness is very different from raw oats added to a meal. If you feed grains to a Husky or Malamute, fully cook them. Never soak a grain and leave it raw or undercooked.

Always fully cook all grains before feeding. Soaking alone is insufficient โ the grain must reach full cooking temperature to break down phytates. This is especially critical for breeds with zinc-responsive dermatosis. A raw or lightly cooked oat or grain will bind much of the zinc your dog eats alongside it.
Also avoid feeding high-legume diets (pea, lentil, chickpea-heavy) to these breeds, as legume phytates compound the problem. Stick to well-cooked rice, sweet potato or pumpkin as carbohydrate sources.
Best Zinc Food Sources for Dogs
Beef (muscle meat)
One of the best balanced zinc sources in animal protein. Higher in zinc than chicken.
Lamb
Excellent zinc source. A useful rotation protein for skin-sensitive breeds.
Sardines
Good zinc alongside excellent omega-3. A strong choice for coat-focused feeding.
Dark Meat Chicken
Moderate zinc but highly bioavailable. Thigh and leg better than breast.
Pumpkin Seeds (ground)
High in zinc but also in phytates. Must be well processed. Limited use in zinc-sensitive breeds.
Eggs
Moderate zinc, highly digestible and well-tolerated. Good regular addition to the diet.
Other Breeds Prone to Zinc-Related Skin Issues
Beyond Huskies and Malamutes, zinc-related skin problems occur in Bull Terriers (where a genetic zinc metabolism defect can cause hyperkeratosis), German Shepherds, Dobermans, and Standard Poodles. Fast-growing large breed puppies can become transiently zinc-deficient if their diet doesn't scale with their growth rate. And dogs fed long-term on heavily processed, low-quality commercial food sometimes show signs of zinc deficiency simply because the zinc in those products โ often from inorganic sources โ has poor bioavailability.
Diet Approach for Skin-Sensitive Dogs
The foundation is animal protein. Meat-based zinc is substantially more bioavailable than plant-source zinc because it doesn't arrive bound to phytates. Building the diet around beef, lamb, chicken thigh and sardines โ rather than legume-heavy or high-grain formulations โ is the single most effective dietary intervention for zinc status.
Omega-3 fatty acids from salmon oil complement this by independently supporting the skin's barrier function and reducing the inflammatory component that often accompanies zinc-related skin disease. The two nutrients work well together: zinc for structural integrity of skin cells, omega-3 for reducing inflammation and supporting moisture retention.
Zinc supplementation should only be done under veterinary guidance. Zinc toxicity in dogs (from over-supplementation, zinc-containing metal objects ingested, or zinc coins) causes severe haemolytic anaemia and is rapidly life-threatening. The gap between a beneficial supplementation dose and a toxic dose is small. Get a diagnosis first, then follow veterinary dosing guidance precisely.
When Diet Alone May Not Be Enough
For Huskies and Malamutes with confirmed zinc-responsive dermatosis, dietary optimisation is necessary but usually not sufficient. Most of these dogs require ongoing zinc supplementation โ at doses and forms determined by a vet โ to maintain adequate zinc status given their absorption impairment. The good news is that the condition is very well managed with the right supplementation protocol, and affected dogs can have excellent quality of life.
For other dogs with skin problems that might have a zinc component, the first step is always veterinary assessment โ ruling out other causes (allergies, infection, hypothyroidism, Cushing's disease) before attributing it to zinc. A dietary improvement is unlikely to cause harm, but it is not a substitute for diagnosis.
