Weight Loss Bowl

This bowl uses a simple principle: replace calorie-dense carbohydrates with high-volume, low-calorie vegetables. Your dog still gets a full, satisfying bowl — but green beans, broccoli and courgette do most of the filling, not rice. Lean chicken breast preserves muscle while the dog burns fat.

⚖️ The Weight Loss Strategy: Volume Without Calories

The key to sustainable dog weight loss is satiety — your dog needs to feel full, or they'll beg, steal, and find other ways to eat more. Non-starchy vegetables have the same volume as calorie-dense rice but a fraction of the energy. This bowl keeps total volume high and protein high (for muscle preservation) while cutting the calories that actually matter: dietary fat and dense carbohydrates. The target is a sustained 1–2% body weight loss per week, not rapid starvation-style restriction.

Why This Bowl Works

🐓

Lean Chicken Breast

Chicken breast has roughly half the fat of chicken thigh. High protein, low fat — preserves muscle mass while the calorie deficit burns stored fat instead.

🫘

Green Beans (Bulk)

Green beans are 90% water and extremely low in calories. A large portion adds almost no energy but creates significant satiety through volume and fibre.

🥦

Broccoli (Fibre + Fullness)

High fibre, low calorie, and highly satiating. Also provides vitamins and sulforaphane — a beneficial phytonutrient — with very few calories per gram.

🥒

Courgette (Water Volume)

Over 95% water by weight. Adds bowl volume and moisture intake with negligible calorie contribution.

🍚

Reduced Rice Portion

Brown rice stays for digestive health and some carbohydrate fuel, but the portion is half that of a standard bowl. Vegetables replace the calorie-heavy rice volume.

🐟

Salmon Oil (Maintained)

Omega-3 from salmon oil is kept at maintenance dose even in a calorie-restricted recipe — EPA and DHA support metabolic health and reduce the inflammation that excess body fat causes.

Ingredients

Select your dog's size. These portions are designed for a calorie-restricted maintenance phase — about 20–25% below typical maintenance intake. If your dog is severely obese, your vet may advise different targets.

🐟 Omega-3 Stays Even on a Diet

Obesity itself causes chronic low-grade inflammation. Omega-3 from salmon oil directly counters this. Even in a calorie-restricted recipe, salmon oil is kept at its standard maintenance dose — the calorie contribution of ½–1½ tsp is negligible (roughly 20–60 kcal), and the anti-inflammatory benefit during weight loss is significant. Do not omit the salmon oil in an attempt to cut more calories.

How to Make It

1

Poach the chicken breast

Simmer chicken breast in unsalted water for 20–22 minutes until cooked through. No oil, no salt, no seasoning. Shred or dice once cooled. Using breast (not thigh) is a meaningful calorie reduction — about 50 fewer kcal per 130g serving from lower fat content.

2

Cook brown rice

Cook the reduced rice portion separately. This bowl uses half the typical rice portion — the calorie gap is filled by vegetables, not air, so your dog still gets a full-looking bowl.

3

Steam all vegetables

Steam green beans, broccoli and courgette until cooked through and soft enough to eat easily. No oil. No salt. The goal is to serve a generous volume of food that feels substantial in the bowl but contributes very few calories.

💡 The vegetables should take up at least half the bowl — this is intentional
4

Cool fully before adding supplements

Combine everything in the bowl and let it cool to room temperature. No need to warm the bowl — salmon oil must go in cold.

5

Add salmon oil and eggshell calcium cold

Stir in salmon oil and eggshell calcium after cooling. Both must go in cold to preserve their benefit and ensure proper absorption.

🐕 Breeds Most Prone to Obesity

Certain breeds have metabolic or hormonal tendencies that make weight management more challenging. These dogs need lower calorie targets and more consistent exercise management than average.

📏 Track Progress: Body Condition Score, Not Just Weight

Body Condition Score (BCS) is a 1–9 scale where 4–5 is ideal. At ideal weight, you should be able to feel (but not see) ribs easily with light pressure, the waist should be visible from above, and there should be an abdominal tuck visible from the side. Weigh your dog every 2 weeks and assess BCS monthly. Aim for 1–2% body weight loss per week — faster than this risks muscle loss alongside fat.
