A proper dinner from chicken breast
This is the useful kind of cook-together recipe: the shared work happens first, and the flavouring happens after the dog's food is safely out of the way. Poaching the chicken breast keeps it tender enough for both dishes. Cooking the rice separately gives you exact cooked weights for the dog calculation and stops salty stock from crossing into the wrong bowl.
The human bake is creamy, savoury and crisp at the edges. The dog portion is deliberately plainer. It has measured calcium and a modest amount of marine omega 3, but it is still labelled as an occasional meal because it has not been formulated to supply every essential vitamin and trace mineral.

Method
Cook the chicken breast gently
Place the chicken breasts in a saucepan and cover with plain water. Bring to a gentle simmer and cook until the thickest part reaches 74°C/165°F. Rest for five minutes, then dice. Do not add salt, stock, garlic or onion to this pan.
Cook the rice plainly
Cook the rice in plain water. Weigh 300 g cooked rice for the dog batch and 300 g for the human casserole. If you have less rice, reduce both sides rather than estimating the dog calculation.
Prepare the dog vegetables
Steam or boil 100 g carrot and 100 g green beans until tender. Chop them small enough for your dog. Keep them in the plain preparation area.
Weigh 250 g cooked chicken breast, 300 g cooked rice, 100 g carrot and 100 g green beans into a separate bowl. Move it away from the human ingredients.
Build the human sauce
Heat the oven to 190°C/375°F. Warm the olive oil in a large pan. Cook the onion until soft, then add the garlic and flour. Stir for one minute. Gradually whisk in the stock and milk, then simmer until lightly thickened.
Assemble the casserole
Fold the human chicken, rice, peas and carrots into the sauce. Add half the cheese, thyme and pepper. Taste and season. Transfer to a baking dish, top with the remaining cheese and bake for 25 to 30 minutes until bubbling and golden.
Finish the dog batch after cooling
Once the plain dog mixture is cool, distribute 2.0 g eggshell powder thoroughly through the whole batch. Add fish oil supplying 600 mg combined EPA and DHA and mix again. Divide by weight into five portions of approximately 150 g.
Store safely
Serve cool or gently warmed, never hot. Refrigerate for up to three days or freeze promptly in individual containers. Do not leave cooked rice at room temperature.
Dog batch nutritional profile
Calculated from typical USDA FoodData Central values for cooked skinless chicken breast, cooked white rice, cooked carrots and cooked green beans. Estimated ingredients before eggshell: calcium ~142 mg and phosphorus ~758 mg. Two grams of eggshell at approximately 380 mg calcium per gram brings estimated total calcium to ~902 mg. Ingredient brands and cooking yield change the result.
Portioning for your dog
A 175 kcal portion can be a full meal for some small dogs and only part of a meal for a larger dog. Start with your dog's daily calorie target, subtract treats and other food, then weigh the appropriate amount. Do not add this bowl on top of the normal ration.
Chicken breast keeps the batch relatively lean, but portion size still matters for Corgis and other breeds prone to weight gain. Use the Breed-to-Bowl calorie calculator as a starting point and check body condition with your veterinarian.
For regular feeding, take the exact cooked weights and supplement labels to your veterinarian or a veterinary nutritionist. A recurring version needs a complete micronutrient plan made for the dog eating it.
⚠️ Keep these out of the dog bowl
Onion, garlic, chives, leeks, salty stock, cheese, seasoned sauce and gravy belong only in the human casserole. Also avoid grapes, raisins, xylitol, chocolate, macadamias, alcohol and cooked bones. Never give the dog the browned edge or leftovers from the seasoned human dish.
Check with your veterinarian before changing your dog's diet. This recipe is not suitable as written for puppies, pregnancy or nursing. Dogs with kidney disease, pancreatitis, liver disease, urinary stones, allergies or another medical condition need an individually chosen recipe.
