Why this format suits a Labrador household
Labradors are often intensely food motivated, and a well studied POMC gene deletion is associated with increased food motivation and body weight in some Labs, but not every Lab. A measured bowl lets the dog join dinner without receiving buttery pastry or an untracked plateful of scraps. Lean chicken breast and vegetables keep the base lower in energy density than the human pie, while gram based portions make calories visible.

Cook once, finish two ways
Start with a plain shared base
Cook the chicken completely without seasoning. Boil or steam the potato, carrots, peas and green beans until tender. Keep the onion, garlic, stock and pastry sealed and away from this stage.
Measure the dog's half first
With clean utensils, weigh the eight dog-side ingredients into a dedicated bowl. Do not estimate by eye and do not scoop the dog's share back out of the seasoned human pan.
Make the little oat toppers
Mix the ground oats with the egg and a spoonful of water to form a soft dough. Shape four small discs and bake at 180°C/350°F for 12 to 15 minutes, until set. These are part of the calculated dog batch, not extra treats.
Finish your pot pie
In a separate pan, soften the onion and garlic in butter. Stir in flour, then gradually add stock and milk. Add the human chicken and vegetables, thyme and pepper. Transfer to two ramekins, top with pastry, vent, and bake at 200°C/400°F until deeply golden and bubbling.
Cool the dog's bowl
Stir the olive oil through the plain dog mixture. Cool fully, then fold in the drained sardines and finely ground eggshell powder. Divide into portions based on your dog's calorie target, and crumble the baked topper over the portion at serving time.
Mix thoroughly
Stir the cooled dog batch well so the sardines and eggshell calcium are distributed evenly before portioning.
Dog batch nutritional profile
Calculated from cooked weights using USDA FoodData Central records 171140, 170440, 170394, 170420, 169141, 173904, 173424, 172336 and the USDA entry for canned sardines in oil, drained solids. Rounded estimate before eggshell: calcium ~573 mg and phosphorus ~1,812 mg. Sardine brands and liquids vary, so the label and final formulation still need checking. USDA FoodData Central.
Calcium and omega 3 additions
Add these only after the food has cooled:
- Eggshell calcium: add enough finely ground powder to provide approximately 1,601 mg elemental calcium. This is about 4.0 g, or 0.89 teaspoon if the powder provides about 1,800 mg per teaspoon. Check the product label because density varies.
- Sardines: add one 95 g can of plain sardines in water with the soft bones included. Drain them first. They provide EPA and DHA, but the amount varies by brand.
Important: eggshell powder and sardines improve the calcium balance and omega 3 content, but they do not guarantee that every NRC or AAFCO nutrient target is met. Check with your veterinarian before feeding this as the sole long term diet.
⚠️ Pot pie hazards for dogs
Traditional pot pie commonly contains onion, garlic, salty stock, butter, cream and a large amount of fatty pastry. Do not offer your dog the human filling, gravy, crust or leftovers. Also avoid cooked bones, xylitol, grapes, raisins, chocolate, alcohol and macadamias. The safe version depends on physical separation before seasoning.
Portioning, storage and vet check
The dog batch contains approximately 104 kcal per 100 g before the eggshell powder is added. Use your dog's established calorie target rather than a breed wide cup allowance, and include the oat topper in the day's calories. Refrigerate for up to 3 days or freeze measured portions for up to 2 months.
Check with your veterinarian before changing your dog's diet. Puppies and dogs with pancreatitis, kidney disease, liver disease, urinary disease, allergies or another medical condition need an individual plan.
