One dish, handled with respect
Hainanese chicken rice is not simply boiled chicken beside white rice. Its character comes from gently poached chicken, rice cooked with chicken fat and aromatics, clean cucumber, and the ginger, soy and chilli condiments served alongside. It travelled with Hainanese communities and became deeply rooted in Singapore and across Southeast Asia.
The dog bowl shares the poached chicken, plain rice and cucumber. It does not borrow the sauces. Basil may disagree with that boundary, but onion-family ingredients and salty condiments belong firmly on the human plate.

- 300 g · ~1½ cups rawjasmine rice, rinsed
- 2 tbsprendered chicken fat or neutral oil
- 6 slicesfresh ginger, divided
- 4 clovesgarlic, finely chopped
- 2 smallshallots, finely chopped
- 2 leavespandan, knotted, optional
- To servecucumber, coriander, dark soy dressing and Hainanese chilli sauce
Method
Poach the chicken plainly
Put the chicken in a snug pot and cover with water. Bring just to a simmer, then reduce the heat so the surface barely moves. Cook until the thickest part reaches 74°C/165°F. Rest it in the liquid for 10 minutes, then lift it out. Do not salt or season the pot.
Cook the dog's rice
Cook enough jasmine rice in plain water to yield 250 g. Keep this pan free of salt, stock cubes, chicken fat, ginger, garlic, shallot and pandan.
Prepare the shared cucumber
Wash and slice cucumber for the table. Finely dice 50 g for the dog bowl before any dressing is added.
Weigh 250 g skinless, boneless cooked breast, 250 g plain cooked rice and 50 g cucumber. Check carefully for bones. Cool and refrigerate separately.
Build the human rice
Sauté the garlic, shallot and half the ginger in chicken fat until fragrant. Stir in the rinsed raw rice, then cook it with strained poaching liquid and pandan until tender.
Finish the human chicken and sauces
Slice the remaining chicken with its skin. Season the human portion to taste and serve with cucumber, coriander, dark soy dressing, ginger sauce and chilli sauce. Keep every condiment away from the dog bowl.
Portion the dog batch
Mix the plain dog ingredients and divide into four equal 137 g portions. Serve cool or gently warmed. Refrigerate up to three days or freeze promptly.
Dog batch nutritional profile
Estimate based on cooked weights and USDA FoodData Central reference values for roasted skinless chicken breast, cooked white rice and raw cucumber. Approximate batch totals: calcium 71 mg and phosphorus 690 mg. Ingredient and cooking variation changes the result.
Why there is no guessed eggshell scoop
Adding calcium could improve this one ratio, but it would not make the bowl complete. The correct amount would have to be calculated from the full recipe, including its actual phosphorus and existing calcium, then checked alongside every other essential nutrient.
This recipe is labelled honestly as an occasional meal. If you want to use it as a recurring base, take the exact weights to your veterinarian or veterinary nutritionist and ask for a complete formulation. Read how eggshell calcium should be calculated.
Corgi note: a 186 kcal portion can be a substantial share of a compact dog's daily energy. Use the calorie calculator, weigh the serving and adjust for body condition and activity.
⚠️ Keep these on the human side
Garlic, shallot, onion, spring onion, salty stock, soy sauce, sesame-soy dressing and chilli sauce must not enter the dog portion. Remove every cooked bone and do not offer chicken skin to dogs prone to digestive upset or pancreatitis.
Check with your veterinarian before changing your dog's diet. This bowl is not for puppies, pregnancy, growth or dogs requiring a therapeutic diet. Dogs with pancreatitis, kidney disease, liver disease, allergies or urinary disease need individual advice.
